primal uses a caching server

it is open source, you can run your own, there is toggle in settings to change which one you use

They use a centralized cache server that pulls and aggregates this information from the relays.

Using a custodial cache service.

I don't think I understand custodial in this context.

- A self-custodial nostr client gets and counts reactions by itself.

- A custodial nostr client get the counts from another service.
