Protectionism is never a good option for the population in general. For the people close to the power that can maintain its bussines without having competitors is good.

It will be nearlly imposible for the BRICS to have a functional currrency. The EU with developed economies and economic enviroments and objectives more or less alligned have huge problems to maintein the EUR, imagine what would be to manage a currency for the BRICS
