I have installed a few Linux distro in the past, and I really wanted to give #Nixos a try.

However, it would not install. Regardless of which option I choose in the partition step, it either fails, or the installer has the "next" button grayed out.

Also, in the previous step, Unfree Software, documentation and tutorials show an additional dialog box; however, during my setup, that dialog is missing, and I just get a message that it failed.

I tried on two machines already, and it fails on both. Very disappointing experience.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Why are you doing this to yourself 😆

Haha, that's what I have been asking myself. Stubbornness makes me keep going with this.

#NixOS installer? Why not follow manual install instructions?

But why not with the installer?

command line was first

OK, but the interface should work as well, shouldn't it?

BTW, I tried the manual way through the terminal, and that didn't quite work either, but at least it deleted the old partions, and then the interface installation completed.

The only error I got was the unfree software, but at least I can report that NixOS is now installed and running.

I managed to make some changes to the config file, tested one rebuild and rollback, and now I can see the two generations listed. Cool. I like it. Just the installation was frustrating compared to other distros.

it appears as if the installer is not a first class citizen

Sorry to hear! IIRC, I followed [these instructions](https://nixos.wiki/wiki/NixOS_Installation_Guide) to the letter, and got it installed. The installer doesn't do any partitioning, had to do all that manually from a command-line, so it's a bit more involved than most other distros (though I've only had experience with Raspbian OS, Ubuntu, and NixOS).

Thanks. I will give it another try with the instructions you shared.
