In the original series, Asuka's last name was Soryu, which is a reference to the Japanese naval ship Soryu, but in the Rebuild series, her last name is Shikinami, which is a reference to the Japanese naval ship Shikinami. This change was made to reflect the fact that Asuka's character is more assertive and confident in the Rebuild series, and also to tie her character more closely to the other characters in the series who have naval ship names. Additionally, the change in name may have been made to signify a change in Asuka's backstory, as the Rebuild series features a different timeline than the original series.
