Mais non et depuis !?

What prompted you to make this statement?

I was prompted to make this post based a post on X.com by the local news media about David Seymour pushing for equal rights for everybody, versus Maori leaders pushing for the government to uphold the Treaty of Watangi.

The level of consequence of the apartheid is rather trivial compared to South Africa or Israel/Palestine.

But technically it exists. And I thought that would be a shock to many non-New Zealanders, so I made the statement.

Here is what is going on, which I define as apartheid:

1. There are two classes of people defined by law

2. The laws give one of these classes more rights and/or privileges than the other class

3. The classes are divided along racial lines

4. The group with more rights by law is the minority group

So the Maori supremacists insist that the Treaty of Waitangi, being a treaty between two different people, means that they are different from the NZ Crown and that the Maori and the Crown are in partnership together ruling this country.

Bleeding heart liberals who see Maori having worse life outcomes push for laws similar to affirmative action to give Maori people more and more funded services that are not available to non-Maori people.

David Seymour (the leader of the ACT party), part-Maori himself, believes like I do that the result of the treaty was to combine two different people into a single group, and that subsequent to it's signing New Zealand was one country with all it's people having equal rights, and he wants to remove the racism from the laws.

I often also made the point that programs offered to Maori people because statistically Maori suffer more in that domain (let's use stop-smoking program as an example) would be better targetted at people who need to stop smoking if they targetted anybody with a smoking problem, rather than using race as a proxy to determine who might have a smoking problem.

North and South?
