After firing hundreds of federal employees with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) last week, including critical meteorologists and forecasters with the National Weather Service (NWS); the Trump Administration and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have now notified NOAA that they will soon be canceling their lease on two major centers for weather forecasting in the United States. These centers include NOAA’s Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park, Maryland, which contains the Weather Prediction Center (WPC) used for day-to-day weather forecasting and modeling; as well as the the NWS’s Radar Operations Center (ROC) located in Norman, Oklahoma, which works towards the development, maintenance, and training for the Next-Generation Radar (NEXRAD) Network.
