Capitalism, as we know it today, has only existed since the 18th century. Most of human history has taken place outside of it. Capitalism is not a prerequisite for a flourishing society. It may even be what is preventing us from living as weβre intended to.

Completely false
What exactly do you disagree with? Of course there was commerce before the 18th century. However, I think itβs pretty commonly understood that capitalism as we know it today really takes off with Adam Smith in the 18th century.
Depends how people subjectively interpret "as we know it today"
Personal property and voluntary trade (capitalism) date back very far, and the only thing preventing flourishing is the government constantly getting in the way of capitalism imho!
Owning things and trading them is necessary but not sufficient to describe capitalism. Capitalism can only exist as an economic system because of liberal government and its understanding of human nature. As I understand it, the foundation of liberalism gives way to the nation state and capitalism (or worse, socialism) as a package deal because of its radical individualism.
