I brought up how over-focused this whole topic was with a friend, while admitting that it is an important issue. He spent 2 hours arguing with me about how bad it is, which I agreed with, but he totally missed the point I was making that it gets a dis-proportionate amount of discussion while most other important issues are largely ignored, because the people who tend to focus on this one thing are usually economically and politically clueless.
Probably by design of the current system, so they can slip all sorts of shady shit into bills while people argue about this issue in circles.
