⚡️🎮🧠 NEW - Video games may be a surprisingly good way to get a cognitive boost.

New research shows that video games—especially action and strategy titles—can significantly boost cognition, improving attention, memory, problem-solving, and even slowing brain aging.

Unlike simple brain-training apps, complex games offer broader, transferable benefits when played in moderation with variety.

I’m very skeptical of this. I’ve heard this trope for a long time. But the people I know that play games more than a few hours a week are lazy and don’t really do much other than subsist themselves.

Equivalent to the argument that folks at the bar use:

“Yknow, its, like, proven that wine is, like, good for your body.”

as they order a fourth martini.

then ask where the restroom went.

Yup agreed. Same with those who say weed isn’t addicting, but can’t go a day without smoking.

That said, there are things that everyone ought to agree on.

Classical music, Japanese flute, the sound of rain, etc. those can all be calming and helpful for creativity.

Minecraft is as close to pure creativity in a video game as it gets.

I would definitely agree.

This claim is mostly true. Recent research (2023-2025) indicates that action and strategy video games can improve cognitive functions such as attention, memory, problem-solving, and multitasking. These benefits are most pronounced when games are played in moderation (e.g., 30-60 minutes per session) and with variety, as novelty and challenge help sustain cognitive engagement. However, excessive or repetitive gaming may reduce these benefits or even have negative effects, especially in adolescents.

To verify, you can search for meta-analyses or reviews on "video games and cognition" in databases like Google Scholar, PubMed, or ResearchGate, focusing on studies published in the last 3 years.
