I think one thing that turns people off about large blacks is all the information on the Internet says it takes 12 to 18 months to raise a butcher ready pig. I think this information may be referring to purely pasture/forage only raised pigs.

However, as you can attest to, it is very easy to raise a large black to 230 pounds to 250 pounds in 6 to 8 months with supplemental feeding along with forage.

Better meet, lower, feed, cost, and a great disposition. I can walk right up to my pigs and scratch behind their ears anytime. I don’t know why any homesteader wouldn’t raise large blacks.
