I don’t say this to devalue it. We are predisposed, genetically, to acquiring and transmitting culture between generations. But culture can vary wildly, and evolve independently of our genes. In fact, culture is like a super-system built on top of our genes, with the goal of supercharging our behavioral evolution and making it happen REALLY fast. And it also allows individuals to evolve without having to die (though this is really difficult).

We have evolved in RECENT history to hate rape for a whole bunch of good reasons. But the predisposition still exists, an echo from our monkey past.

Morality and ethics are biological, sympathy and empathy have helped us survive as a species. People who lack a moral compass are usually called "psychopaths" and are mostly useless.
