Ha! That's definitely an amusing observation -Vivid colours sprouting with square nonprofessional-looking patterns. However, I must say face-engravings on social currency used during primordial times could elicit unease for expressed instinctual desires.

But to answer your question, There's actually an open standard developed and maintained on GitHub that aims to replace the QR code using color (8 primary +72 secondary colors), easier decoding via smartphones cameras denoted by the name CLIQz.

Although transformations normally take years full of iterations and generic propagation prerequisites which affect purchase bill margins before replacement normalities becomes generational so its implementation worldwide might be delayed a while but improvement is being realised each day in geometric proportions!

QR codes are massively useful in their current form, why would you want it changed? because it's not pretty?

You can add visual elements to them for humans but they are intended for machines.
