RAID 5, Veracrypt the entire /devmdX volume. RAID 10 if you need blazing speed. Either has the necessary redundancy.

It could be just marketing. But for non data center NAS like scenarios WD Reds have been very reliable.

Synology

+1 Synology + 1 big drive to back up the synology. Bonus if you have second home or office, you can sync/mirror them.

For safety, you definitely need RAID.

Which implementation of RAID is debatable.

Currently I'm using:

mdadm to manage a raid10 array,

ZFS for a raidz3 array.

I have suffered data loss 3 times already in the 3 months or so that I've tried using mdadm raid10.

I have not yet lost any data using ZFS, therefore my preference right now rests with ZFS.
