Today in 1945, Robert Hampton Gray died.

Born in Trail, B.C. in 1917, he earned the Victoria Cross for his actions on the day he died when he sank the Amakusa before his plane crashed into the water.

His memorial is the only known one for an Allied serviceman on Japanese soil.
