In India, in loose Hindu tradition crows are thought to have souls of returning ancestors & if crows are cawing in front of your home, it means there will be visitors soon.
But more than crows, I've found that if you can hear a bat 🦇, it's mostly a distress call (which is very gut-wrenching)
It is a universal culture found worldwide that associates birds with the soul. Even in Japan, there are regions where people believe that crows carry the souls of the dead. This is probably related to the practice of bird burial.
Bats are also interesting, as are birds. I once heard a talk from a researcher studying the developmental biology of bats in university. Unfortunately, I have forgotten most of what I learned then...
