The problem is this is not the role of the federal government in the US. This is good. The federal government should stick to its role as defined in 1791.

The Open Tech Fund got killed over the weekend. It supported Signal, Tor, VPN access and lots of other good initiatives. I met some people from their team last year at a conference and asked if they were resilient to a second Trump term (they got almost killed during the first). Yep. Giving money to those programs was socialism. America was not founded on the idea of government funding projects like those.
