Every culture has, and currently still, engaged in it. Each has their own thresholds for what is acceptable and what isn't and anything that falls outside the bounds of acceptability is "cancelled". I have yet to see anything besides this.

Even free speech absolutists usually drop it once someone pushes for things they don't want.
