it's not just you, the latest Chrome on Ubuntu and Debian based operating systems looks ugly and is broken. this wavy or comic sans looking font is because of an incompatibility between Chrome's new "Fontations" rendering engine and the "Fira Sans" font.

this issue is fixed in the latest Chrome Canary, which means it's coming down the line soon to use on stable channels, but if you want a fix now, here is a workaround:

Install and open the GNOME Tweaks app (sudo apt install gnome-tweaks).

Go to the "Fonts" section.

Click on the font name next to "Interface Text" (which is "Fira Sans Regular").

Change it to a different font. "Noto Sans Regular" worked perfectly for me.

Restart Chrome completely.

Please note: This changes fonts system-wide and not just for Chrome.

I was wondering about that.... not enough to look into it, but wondered.

It was driving me nuts! The font is so ugly.
