One of my favourite things at this time of year is the return of the Kereru, or Native Wood Pigeon. These things are about 3 quarters the size of a chicken and quite a few come to visit every spring and feed on the blossom. Where they go for the rest of the year is a mystery, but when these guys start showing up you know Summer is just around the corner.
