A 2” by 4” is still called 2x4, but now it’s 1.6” by 3.2”.
That old, tight wood is gone for good from commercial stock. The only way to get your hands on it now is to mill it yourself.
The new wood is fine for construction, but I still like to some of my own harvested wood in my projects. 
A typical male problem. Get your money and wood hard! 🤪
