Making hay in the late 19th century.

The most shocking thing this picture brings to light is how many people the countryside used to be able to support and the value of community. Our rural communities sure are shrinking.

Having grown up "in town" and moving to a rural community, the community aspect of rural living is significantly stronger than anything you'll find in the city and suburbs in my experience. People are never 'too busy' to lend a hand.

I concur. After heavy rain, my road washed out and my culvert was a mess. People from at least three different homesteads came out to help me figure out the best way to repair it.
