I am paraphrasing Dorothy Sayers, author of the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries. When he (Lord Peter) married Harriet and moved to the country, he hired local people from the village instead of bringing in his toney London/Oxford servants. His subsequent housekeeper was a gossip quite colorful in her expressions. She described his arrival in the village, where the peasantry were thrilled to see his Daimler pull through their dusty lanes, as “buzzin’ round himself like *wopses ‘round a jampot.”

*wasps

Lol it said it was a British phrase
