Depending on where you are going, you may need a fixer, i.e., someone who lives there or has visited the area, to advise you. I grew up in a very dangerous city, and a tourist could easily wander into a risky situation. This applies not only to places but also to behaviors, such as the clothes you wear, using mobile phones, cameras, and so on
