I already feel like nostr, at least with amethyst and the relays I have, is close to what I want out of social media: a lot of interesting posts every day, a lot of possibilities for interesting conversation. It still falls short in one general sense: due to a severe lack of scale, and a somewhat homogeneous population, it's a long way from giving me any kind of realtime news feed in the way that Twitter could. Yeah not an earth shattering insight, I know 😄

I would agree but when I tried checking back in over in normie land, it was nothing but doom and big blockers who think lightning doesn't work. I'll pass. IMO this is the best part of the internet because it's filled with the best users.
I think maybe you can somewhat fix it with some news follows. It's still not twitter, but I'm confident we will win in the fullness of time.
To be honest I get my most interesting content on the Fediverse via Mastodon, at least related to STEM topics and my professional field. Nostr has its place and has a bright future but man, it sure has a lot of self-referential, repetitive content.
I get your point about technical specialisms and mastodon. I couldn't get over the friction of localized control and data ownership. Too much responsibility on admins. And of course, while I agree you can get access to a variety of communities on there (at least, some), it still fails w.r.t. my last paragraph.
Oh, sure. I don't post very often on Mastodon, but the academic related content is not really found elsewhere, and I don't reference my account there as any reliable way of reaching me.
Nostr is clearly the superior underlying technology. I'm just really looking forward to when the most frequent topic of discussion here isn't...nostr itself 😏
I don't think anyone really has any plan to address that scaling issue you're referring to, which is unfortunate.
"Other stuff" kinds will bring more diversity and relevance into kind1 as well
I still think someone should make "decentralized Twitter" in a way that scales all the way up, if Nostr is not going to do it.
