It isn't. What you're describing is called earth shine. This is when earth reflects light back to the moon. From earth this can be seen, when the moon *isn't* full, but we see that part of it that isn't lighted by the sun (so we can see the darker part, even if there isn't direct sunlight reflecting from it).
