It would be interesting to take the data back another 10 or 20 years to see how the correlation coefficient has changed over time.

IMO:

The political leaders of Canada certainly influence this but overall I don’t think it would be vastly different if the popular opposition party’s were in charge. Also believe the correlation is a global trend and more particularly a western world trend.
