Americans can now effectively say "Teenagers are mentally retarded. So of course we have to treat them like toddlers."

They hide the notion behind language like "power imbalance" and "lack of mental development"

Sixteen year olds are young adults. Perfectly capable of choosing their own sex partners.

They need no special legal "protection". In fact laws governing their romantic ties almost always boomerang and harm the very people they purport to protect.
