what are your takes on systemd? I'm not getting if all the fuss around it is just hipster crying or whatnot

I think it's hipsters crying. I have used systemd for a long time now and wrote a lot of service scripts. It rules all major distros in the enterprise.
that's interesting. It's a different scenario than wayland/X11 or even pipewire/pulse, which are being introduced in 'big' distros
