Apparently the original script was more about the relationship between Hancock and Ray's son Aaron, who idolizes the superhero despite his flaws. There's plenty of room there for great character arcs too.

Along similar lines, Hancock has power but no passion. Aaron has passion, but no power. By becoming surrogate uncle and newphew, Hancock and Aaron both learn something important about being a man, and that caring for someone other than ourselves is what it really means to be a hero.
