Why would Bulgaria give up it's sovereignty to join the EU? And don't say defense, the EU has no military power.

The issue isn't that it should get it back - the damage was done when they made the switch. Prices doubled overnight for many basic staples and never went back.

The Bulgarian Lev is pegged to the Euro, and before that, it was pegged to the Deutsche Mark.
