It’s one of several ways. They are better than most in many ways. But I don’t trust any exchanges ultimately

You must self custody your bitcoin. Look into getting a cold wallet and use bitcoin only platforms like Swan

Swan has its problems as well. Yes, self custody is the way. Keep spreading the word though, plenty of people do keep their corn on exchanges
