This amazing creature is called prairie blazing star (Liatris pycnostachya) & it's native where I live. It's about 5 ft tall at this point. The blooms open at the top & work their way down. I usually avoid staking but I've no experience with this plant (didn't know it got this big 🤷‍♂️) & it's its 1st yr so I wanted to be sure it didn't snap in the wind.
