If you touch your thumb to each finger bone in your hand you can count by dozens. If you count one finger bone in your other hand for every time you count all your finger bones in your first hand, you can count up to twelve dozen, or 144.
Ancient peoples used to count this way and that's why you see the numbers 3, 12, and multiples of 12 up to 144 featured all throughout the Bible.
