That seems impossible, though. An independent city such as that would need supply lines. Of course, this also depends on the location.

Sarcasm aside, it's really not hard to set up something like this, it's just not really done legally when da gubment wants a cut and to control everything.

Well, yea, that's why I was saying that the location is crucial. Read about the history of Carthage and compare it to the Greek city-states.

We have better transport tech now. Also, a walked city these days, if it had access to good water, would be pretty easy to sustain itself.

Or just grow its own food and generate its own power. Sure, trade is generally good, but not reliance on said trade.

People also just do this with their own homes.

We have more and more people building walled and gated courtyards and letting a large dog live in the courtyard and setting up security systems and floodlights.

Used to all be open.
