You ever read some history and be thinking "what on earth happened to make people do those things?" Well after the past 5 years, I get it. People will cut off their own arms to avoid any hint of ostracization.

It's an epic human weakness, unfortunately the politicians know that.

Be aware of your own ostracization panic or it will be used against you.

I think is deeper than that. At some point I hear about a survivor from concentration caps sumarizing what they think made possible such appalling things.

"People forgot God"

he said, and even without being religious I'm starting to think that was exactly right, in the sense that in life are certain ways that things work and many other ways in wich they fall apart under their own weight.

Forgetting god in that sense, at least for me, it was to forget that most of the ways of transforming society will make it incredibly worst, that is 100% intellectual arrogance believing that it won't be any unforseen consequences acting outside of what worked for thousands of years.

You change something to fix A, the Z and X explode, then change B to fix those and 4 more things fall apart and soon you realize that is was for a reason that people don't do A in the firs place (in the best case)
