Think it uses bluetooth for initial discovery and to create the connection then WIFI to actually transfer the file.

Yea. Just sucks that neither are local solutions. You have to send through an external server somewhere. Airdrop is so damn convenient

I’ve used Snapdrop for an AirDrop like experience. It uses WebRTC to establish a P2P connection with devices on the same network. Though right now it looks like it is down. 😟
