it could also be by using superheated air the pop happens without any significant bias on the forces around it so they come out mostly round
in serbian the word for popcorn is related to the word for snowdrop, the little white bulb flower that appears as the snow melts - the popcorn is Kokice and the flower is Kokiche (they are spelt exactly the same except the second one has a V above the C kokice)
