Number 93: Sharks

Today is #SharkAwarenessDay – a perfect day to dive deeper into the world of these often misunderstood ocean predators that are vital to the health of our marine ecosystems🦈

🦴 Sharks don’t have bones – instead their skeleton is made of cartilage, much like the cartilage in our ears and on the tip of our nose.

🦈 Certain species of female sharks held in captivity have been observed to reproduce by themselves in a process called parthenogenesis.

👵🏻 The Greenland shark is the world’s longest-living vertebrate, with an estimated life-span of 272 years!

🍽️ All sharks use electroreception to detect prey.

🦷 Shark skin is covered in dermal denticles, which are scales made of the same material as human teeth.
