Yep! You are under no legal obligation currently to submit to this. All you have to do is say you’d like to opt out and they will manually check your passport/ID.

Airports are like hell, I was in London recently and they were trialing an entire security line without any human staff. The staff think its great, until they're gone. The airports that haven't been upgraded with the automated check ins etc are NGMI
