There's a certain subset of Christians who are basically doomsday cultists and whenever conflict starts in the holy land they get all excited.

Specifically, dispensationalists. Their eschatology was made up relatively recently as far as church history goes, but they keep on setting dates for the rapture.
I'm not a Dispensationalist, but I do take notice when the Holy Land is in the news. I think it still has a significant role to play, but I doubt any of us know exactly what that will be.
