this is pretty much my conclusion
publicly funded research shouldn't be paywalled
but filtering is not costless either, and arxiv does contain some junk

It's sad and a big contrast to the self-image of academia as this kind of pure-thought paradise of free thinking people, when even the basic way of publishing papers and getting an actual academic position is corrupt to the core.
