This is the part about fiat that bums me out the most. If your savings melts like an ice cube, you don't feel like you can ever have enough to retire. So people naturally act greedy and hoard. There is no psychological sense of "okay I have enough, I can spare to give to my community".
And sadly it has destroyed communities over the decades, because people can't rely on one another, and instead turn to the nanny state, and complain as if they can fix their problems. So sad.
