do you remember the auroras last may and october

what caused them was way way smaller than any previous solar storm that had caused less... the one in may beat the records from the Carrington Event in 1859 which also burned out heaps of the telegraph network

and yes, a lot of big outages in network infrastructure happened at the same time in may and in october, a lot of power systems went down and a lot of network connections failed and had to be repaired

the reason? there is a massive magnetic oscillation that propagates out from the centre of the galaxy that we orbit about every 26000 years, and the distance from here to there is about that many lightyears

there is numerous geological records that concur that the position of the earth's north magnetic pole was elsewhere on the crust meaning that this magnetic polarity shift also can literally flip the crust off its moorings in the mantle and rotate to a new position, because a long term stable magnetic pole MUST be mostly in alignment with the geographical, rotational pole, and this rule applies to the sun, and all the planets, and ...

yeah, there is dozens of other changes going on, there is massive new storm formations in the clouds of jupiter, the wind speeds on venus have accelerated, there is some new strange polar melt and freeze stuff going on on mars, the atmosphere of pluto was half blown away into deep space, and several moons of jupiter have shown some record breaking new activity, Io now has a volcano that is over 100x bigger than any previously observed

whatever is happening to the other planets is going to happen to us, or at least stuff is going to happen for the same reason, and the magnetic pole weakening is caused by the opposition of surrounding fields canceling it out

I know almost nothing about those things, but would be interesting to have more discussions around it and its consequences for what we are building. #geomagnetic #asknostr

yeah, it really literally means we need to have underground shelters, and we need to have backup systems to feed and keep us warm, and we need to carefully decide where to set up because it is all uncertain exactly what will happen, but there is no doubt it will be fairly bad for business as usual for some time

if something like that will ever happen...

it's happened many many times before, during the history of the human race even, and the "recorded history" is literally like 2% of the estimated history of our species

the most recent event was called the Tian Chi Event

this paper discusses it

https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/2014GL059439

it also mentions prior events like the Laschamp and Auckland excursions, these are volcanic eruptions that set in stone magnetic alignments that greatly differ to the magnetic pole we have now

Tianchi was only ~6000 years ago, and i just should emphasise that this is not carbon dating but dating based on the ages of stone, which is a much more reliable dating mechanism - the decay of stones can be much more precisely determined based on their composition and the surrounding decomposed/fractured stone/dirt and its similar or differential composition

yes, it happens, and has happened repeatedly at fairly predictable 6000 year intervals, and we are due for one now

it is really possible also that Tianchi was part of a global catastrophe that was recorded in ancient stories as the Great Flood and there are stories from south and north american, australian aboriginal, asian and african cultures that concur but the exact nature of what happened to each place differed, some described things that could be meteor strikes and airbursts, others involving volcanoes, floods, earthquakes, as well as tsunamis... very likely the Noah story was about a tsunami and pole shift, but it could have been just the simple result of the increased rainfall that goes along with a higher penetration of solar energy, that electrostatically charges the air for more cloud formation and triggers seismic and volcanic events as well as extreme weather events associated with more intense cloud cover and there can even be hundreds of kilometers wide lightning events also called "cosmic thunderbolts" which i think the australian aborigines describe in their Dreamtime stories, and images that could be depictions of the lightning are found in the Magura Caves in Bulgaria

That's a lot of info for my small brain. I would like to see someone with the opposite view on the subject and some interesting debate on that, anyone here on nostr? #asknostr

what would be the opposite view? that there hasn't been magnetic pole excursions before?

it's almost absurd to try and assert that, that's unfalsifiable

the evidence that it has happened, and has happened in extreme in the last 175 years is without question, to the degree of about 20 degrees - that's only a little bit less than the distance between the tropic of cancer and capricorn

I mean if has happened how can we be so sure about the intensity and consequences of that, and what consequences it can have on eletronic devices and etc.

it's already happened, you can just research the studies and analyses that have been done just for the most recent year of solar flare and geomagnetic storms

one of the starlink satellites fell out of the sky, for a start
