Even if Nostr fails to remain decentralized due to the natural economy of scale, it will spread the adoption of Bitcoin via Lightning far and wide, eventually resulting in decentralization of the world's money. And in the end, that will fix everything.

Agreed with the caveat that a better world is still up to The People™️ even on a bitcoin standard 
TCP/IP is decentralized, but the actual applications built upon it do not require we maintain that decentralization. Even the hosting services or your ISP access to it, limits the decentralization in practice. The important bit is that there's an optionality. Someone can go back to the protocol layer, TCP/IP and start again, built alternatives. #Nostr has this feature. If a centralized set of high performance relays behave inappropriately, alternatives will be incentivized. People will seek them. There is a check to the authority that may be created in having the most popular platform. That is sufficient to keep the internet free, while all the ISPs and platforms misbehave.

the problem comes when the monolithic relays begin to add custom functionality and break away from standards in order to save money etc.

It will not fail cause censorship will always be here around. Like Bitcoin can’t fail cause banksters and the worst of them all Central banksters, will always be there trying to force their dirty fiat to steal from us.
As long as the bad guys still exist, nostr and Bitcoin will thrive
