Venerable Daniel the Hermit, born Dumitru, lived in a skete near Neamț Monastery. After a Tatar raid, he found refuge in a cave, later known as Saint Daniel's Cave. Stephen the Great, seeking guidance before a crucial battle against the Ottomans in 1475, visited him. Daniel encouraged Stephen, prophesying victory if he built a church in thanksgiving. Stephen won the Battle of Vaslui and erected Putna Monastery. Daniel continued to advise Stephen, becoming his confessor.
