On April 15, 2025, a man named Mei Shilin, born in 1998 and from Yongfu Town in Muchuan County, Sichuan Province, hung a political banner on a pedestrian bridge near the Chadianzi Bus Station in Chengdu, Sichuan. The banner called on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which rules with authoritarian control, to carry out democratic political reforms in China.

The banner included messages such as:

• “Without political reform, there can be no national revival.”

• “The people don’t need a political party with unchecked power.”

• “China doesn’t need someone to point the way — democracy is the way.”

According to the well-known X (formerly Twitter) account “Teacher Li is Not Your Teacher,” the person who submitted the photo told him, “I’ve been preparing this banner for a year. I hope you can help spread it.”

The banner was hung on a pedestrian bridge outside the Chadianzi Bus Station in Chengdu. Based on the photos shared, it appears the action took place around midnight.

There are still people in China who resist. Because the Chinese Communist Party controls the state’s powerful security forces, very few dare to directly oppose it. Those who do speak out publicly against the CCP are brave heroes.

He has disappeared. I hope he is safe and healthy.
