I had a Lightning-to-USB-C cable with me. Maybe there was a Type-A somewhere, but seemed weird! It was an IC car with CarPlay (including CarPlay over Wi-Fi).

At this point, a lot of people have Type-A/USB-C adapters and cables, as well as USB-C to USB-C. If you bought a new laptop in the last five years, you probably have most or all of what you need. That might reduce the level of complaints—and the whole throughput and charging issue won't seem as extreme, either.
