# **Liberty is for Slaves**
>The week before our intended start, I wrote several protections, one for each of us. As well as I can remember, they were in the following words, to wit: _This is to certify that I, the undersigned, have given the bearer, my servant, full
**liberty** to go to Baltimore, and spend the Easter holidays._

>Frederick Douglas
Mr. Douglas wrote these letters to protect slaves, himself included for their attempt to escape. No doubt, based on similar letters he had read. Notice it does not say these men were free to do thus and such, but rather they had liberty and that revoked after the holidays.
I say again, only citizens, soldiers, and slaves have ***liberty***.
