It's "not the same", and that makes what difference to Jones exactly? He got fined $1.5 billion by an American court in America, went bankrupt, shut down his "free speech" hole.
You can't compare jail and fine, at all. Jail is always worse than fines. Plus you're acting like defamation ain't a crime everywhere.
You can say basically anything in america and its not a crime. In the uk that's not even close to the case. A civil judgment requires someone to sue you, criminal is you vs the govt

By the way, suspended sentence means he did not go to jail. And yes, he was sued by "someone" - that was the public prosecutor.
