Obviously we should be careful, and things that can be done slowly, with years long testing should be. Blockspace isn't scarce, yet. But absolutist ossification is supporting death.
We could also argue segwit made things worse because of the discount, such that spam is more likely to bloat the utxo set. But nobody suggests that segwit was a mistake because it gave us Lightning.
